A clip of Bryan Cranston visibly struggling not to break character on set is making rounds, and it’s a reminder that even the best actors are human.
What makes it interesting is that Cranston is actually known for the opposite — he’s perfectly capable of switching in and out of character between shots, which has left co-stars stunned over the years. Colleagues who worked with him on Breaking Bad have described watching him flip from cold, menacing Walter White to his silly, prank-loving self the moment a director called cut.
His explanation for how he does it: “When I go to work, my body knows where we’re going, and it knows how to get there, and then you flip that switch and cleanse yourself of the toxicity of those emotions you don’t want to carry into your regular life. Actors aren’t born knowing how to use the switch. It’s a skill, and like any skill, it must be practised.”
