Ortaylı, Türk Tarih Kurumu ve Türkiye Bilimler Akademisi şeref üyesi (2012), Makedonya Bilim ve Sanat Akademisi (MANU) onur üyesi (2011), Rusya Bilimler Akademisi Şarkiyat Enstitüsü onursal profesörü, Azerbaycan Milli İlimler Akademisi Tarih Enstitüsü fahri doktoru (2012), Uluslararası Osmanlı Etütleri Komitesi yönetim kurulu üyesi, Avrupa İranoloji Cemiyeti ve Avusturya-Türk Bilimler Forumu üyesiydi. 21 Mayıs 1947 tarihinde Müttefik işgali altındaki Avusturya’nın Bregenz şehrinde doğdu. Akmescitli Şefika Karaşay Ortaylı ve Kefeli Kemal Ortaylı’nın oğludur. Annesi Şefika Ortaylı (1917-2020), Kafkasyalı Karaçay asıllıdır. Kırım Hanlığı’nın önde gelen asilzade ailelerinden, Çarlar tarafından prenslik verilmiş ve Kırım mirzalarından olan Şirinski ailesine mensuptur. Şefika Ortaylı, Stalingrad’da Rus dili ve edebiyatı eğitimi almıştır. Babası ise Kırım doğumlu, Türkçeye Kırım tarihi ve Tatarlar üzerine eserler ve makaleler çevirmiş bir uçak mühendisi olan Kemal Ortaylı’dır. İki yaşındayken ailesiyle birlikte Türkiye’ye göç etti. İlk ve orta öğrenimini İstanbul Avusturya Lisesinde tamamladı. 1965 yılında Ankara Atatürk Lisesinden mezun oldu. Annesi Ankara Üniversitesi Dil ve Tarih-Coğrafya Fakültesi Rus dili ve edebiyatı bölümünde yıllarca Rusça öğretmeni olarak çalıştı. Ortaylı, Türkçe, Almanca ve Rusçanın konuşulduğu ev ortamında büyümüştür. Enver, Emeldar ve Nuriye adlarında üç kardeşi vardır. #fyp #keşfet #storyliktweet
