Aynı zamanda motor tutkunu olan çift, 26 Temmuz'da evliliklerinin birinci yıl dönümünü arkadaşlarıyla birlikte kutlamak için Osmaniye'nin Kadirli ilçesinde düzenlenen motosiklet festivaline gitti. Karatutlu çifti ve arkadaşları festivalde eğlendikten sonra Kahramanmaraş'a dönerken motosikletleri arızalandı. Motosikletlerini emniyet şeridine çekip arızayı gidermeye çalışan çiftin yanlarına yardım etmek için bir çekici durdu. Kısa süre sonra da şoförünün kontrolünü yitirdiği bir TIR, yol kenarındaki çekici ve araçlar ile birlikte eski Kahramanmaraş Barosu Başkanı Mehmet Karaaslan ve İrem Karatutlu'ya çarptı. Kazada TIR'ın altında kalan İrem Karatutlu, iki bacağını diz altından kaybetti. 3 haftada 4 farklı hastanede tedavi gören Karatutlu, tedavisi tamamlandıktan sonra evine döndü. İrem Karatutlu'nun 3 hafta süren zorlu tedavi sürecinde en büyük destekçisi ise eşi oldu. Aynı zamanda fitness eğitmeni olan İrem Karatutlu, iki bacağını birden en mutlu gününde kaybettiğini söyledi. Yaşadığı anları anlatan Karatutlu, her şeyin bir anda olduğunu ve gözünü açtığında kendisini TIR'ın altında bulduğunu belirterek, "O gün evlilik yıl dönümümüzdü. Evlilik yıl dönümümüz için motosiklet festivaline gitmiştik. Dönüş yolundaydık. Emniyet şeridine park etmiştik motorlarımızı. Emniyet şeridine park ettikten sonra yardım için bir çekici geldi yanımıza. Kısa süre sonra bir ses duydum ve TIR'ın geldiğini gördüm. Yaklaşık 600 metre kadar beni sürükledi. Gözümü açtığımda bacaklarım TIR'ın altında kalmıştı. 3 hafta süren tedavimin ardından taburcu olup evime geldim.
