Tevfik Fikret, 24 Aralık 1867’de İstanbul’da doğmuştur. Asıl adı Mehmet Tevfik’tir. Osmanlı Devleti’nin son döneminde yetişmiş, hem edebiyat hem de düşünce dünyasında önemli etkiler bırakmış bir şairdir. Özellikle Servet-i Fünun edebiyatının en güçlü temsilcilerinden biri olarak kabul edilir.Eğitimini Galatasaray Sultanisi’nde (bugünkü Galatasaray Lisesi) tamamlamış, daha sonra aynı okulda öğretmenlik ve müdürlük yapmıştır. Batı edebiyatından etkilenmiş, şiirlerinde hem bireysel hem toplumsal konulara yer vermiştir. İlk dönem şiirlerinde daha çok sanat için sanat anlayışı hâkimken, zamanla toplumsal eleştiriye yönelmiştir. İstibdat dönemine, baskıya ve özgürlüklerin kısıtlanmasına karşı açık bir tavır almıştır.Servet-i Fünun dergisinin edebiyat bölümünü yönetmiş ve bu dergi etrafında toplanan genç şair ve yazarların öncüsü olmuştur. Şiir dili ağır ve süslü olmakla birlikte, düşünce yönü güçlüdür. “Sis” şiirinde İstanbul’u sert bir şekilde eleştirmiş, “Tarih-i Kadim” adlı eserinde ise geleneksel düşünceye karşı cesur fikirler ortaya koymuştur. “Haluk’un Defteri” adlı eserinde oğluna hitaben yazdığı şiirlerde idealist, ilerici ve bilim yanlısı bir gençlik tasviri yapmıştır.Hayatının son dönemlerini Aşiyan’daki evinde geçirmiştir. Bugün bu ev Aşiyan Müzesi olarak ziyaret edilebilmektedir. 19 Ağustos 1915’te hayatını kaybetmiştir. Mezarı da Aşiyan’dadır.Tevfik Fikret, Türk edebiyatında özgürlükçü düşüncesi, yenilikçi şiir anlayışı ve güçlü toplumsal eleştirileriyle önemli bir yer edinmiştir.
