Even the largest real tsunamis are limited by physics. The biggest known wave events—caused by landslides or earthquakes—usually reach tens or hundreds of meters, not kilometres. The ocean simply cannot support a stable wave thousands of meters tall across entire countries. Why? • The energy required would be greater than almost any natural process on Earth. • Ocean depth and gravity cause waves to break and collapse long before reaching extreme heights. • The planet’s crust can’t displace enough water all at once to create a continent-spanning wall of water.
